When Shopping for New Trees, Don't Always Choose the Ones With Leaves

While shopping for new trees, it's human nature to gravitate toward trees, plants and shrubs that are full of green leaves, shoots, blossoms and flowers, while bypassing the section of the gardening center where the bare root trees are stored.

Bare root trees have the misfortune of looking like nothing more than a lifeless pile of sticks. They aren't in pots, there is no dirt involved, nor do the branches have any signs of leaves, buds or greenery. They aren't the prettiest girl at the dance, but many experts agree these are one of the best options for your yard.

These dormant trees arrive with no unexpected pests or diseases, there is no danger of them being root bound and transplant shock is eliminated due to harvesting and storage practices.

The only real criteria to follow when selecting bare root trees is to closely examine the tree's roots to ensure they have been kept moist. A few short weeks after planting they will begin to break their dormancy and new growth will start to emerge.
