Signs That a Damaged Tree Can Still Live

After a particularly devastating spring storm tree damage is not unusual. Many times the visual damage is so severe it is difficult to determine if the damaged tree can survive without calling in a tree care professional. Fortunately, most trees are extremely resilient and can take a great deal of abuse.

Are at least 50 percent of the tree's branches and limbs still intact and in good health? If the tree has retained at least half of its foliage, chances are there will be enough viable nourishment to sustain another growing season.
  • Often the damage looks worse than it really is. After the broken branches have been cleared away, you will probably be surprised how good the tree still looks.
  • Keep the age of the tree in mind. Generally a younger tree can bounce back quicker than one with some age on it.
  • In most cases an older tree can survive the loss of one major branch as long as the remaining limb is pruned back to the trunk and then monitored closely for decay.
