The extreme cold of this winter is hitting many parts of the United States pretty hard. While you might be able to go indoors and warm up by a cozy fire, your trees can't escape the incredibly low temperatures, and it could take a toll on their health. If you’re worried about your trees, make sure you watch for these warning signs:

  • Ruptured bark. When trees that have been planted in the last few years are exposed to extremely cold weather, water can freeze under the thin layer of bark. Once the water gets inside, the bark can rupture and cause damage to trees.
  • Dead branches. Dead branches can occur because of water accumulation, but checking to see if they’re dead isn’t hard. Simply scrape off a bit of the bark to see if the newly exposed part is green and moist.
  • Dead leaves. Dead leaves are often the result of water damage, and can lead to unstable, unhealthy trees that could become problematic.
