The majority of the time tree stress is caused by lack of root nutrition. A tree's root system must have constant access to moisture, oxygen and room to spread out and thrive. If the surrounding soil is hard and compacted, the roots will become stagnant and unable to supply nourishment to the new growth at the top of the tree.

Drought conditions frequently contribute to a tree's stress level. Often, during the height of a drought the tree will continue to look green and healthy. It isn't until months or even years later the tree begins to decline and eventually die. Generally by the time a tree is showing signs of stress, it is too late to save it. Therefore, it's important to be proactive when it comes to tree maintenance.
