Determining the pH of the soil is one of the most important steps in assuring that a tree will thrive. Different trees like different soil conditions. For this simple reason, it is essential to test the pH before planting any tree.
Testing for pH can be simple or difficult, affordable or expensive. Here are three of the easier, more common ways to accomplish this very necessary task:
DIY Test – Mix two containers with ¼ cup of dirt and distilled water each to create a paste. Add vinegar to one - if it fizzes the soil is alkaline. Add baking soda to the other – it it reacts, the soil is acidic. No reaction means that you have a neutral soil.
Use a Specialized Probe - Simply insert into the soil and read the result. These usually cost about $20 at a nursery.
Soil Samples– For the most accuracy, bring or mail a soil sample to a nursery or horticultural lab. The process is a little more expensive, but you will know exactly what conditions you are dealing with.
