The Challenge of Invasive Tree Pests – Emerald Ash Borer

The Challenge of Invasive Tree Pests

Insects and pests can be a nuisance for everyone during the summer in Kansas City.  From your pets, to your home, to even your trees; they are all affected by different species of insects or pests.

The collective whole will remember to give their outdoor pets their flea and tick treatments, but most of us will not think to protect our trees from these invasive creatures. Yet, each year it is an issue for many homeowners throughout the world.

In Kansas City insect and disease control is a common summer concern we hear from our clients.  We have seen our fare share of damaging pests, and one popular pest that has come to light more since it’s discovery in the U.S. in 2002, is the Emerald Ash Borer. Also known as the EAB.

The EAB is originally an exotic beetle species that originated in Asia. It is a green iridescent beetle that has six legs, and a longer oval back/wing set. However, through trade and transport this small insect has made its debut in North America and has been making its presence known.

While the adult EAB does not do much more than nibble on leaves, the larvae (or babies) feed on the inner bark of Ash trees.  By devouring this inner bark, the larvae cause the tree to have difficulties sending water and nutrients through its system.  In time this causes the tree to die. At its best, the damage will halter Ash growth, and weaken limbs and areas affected by the larvae. Unfortunately, both Kansas and Missouri are confirmed states affected by the Emerald Ash Borer.

Thankfully, at Cartwright we are familiar with the latest insect and disease control methods and can help prevent this from ever being an issue. We know you don’t want to be reactive and deal with tree trimming or even tree removal.  With our annual insect prevention treatment, you can rest assure you are protecting your trees, ensuring them the best life for you to enjoy.
