The Importance of Winter Pruning in Kansas City

Why do we suggest Kansas City homeowners have their trees trimmed in winter? Anybody?

In the winter, since all of the leaves have dropped we are able to make out the trees structure more easily. This makes it significantly easier to see if any problems exist and what needs to be trimmed for safety and aesthetics. Technically, being able to see your trees only makes our job easier.

Nature actually made the rules here: you see during the winter months our trees go into what is called dormancy, where they basically hibernate until spring. During this time the tree stops producing sap (along with a bunch of other things we can chat about later). This means fresh wounds will only be exposed to insects and disease for only a short period of time. Pruning in the winter also promotes faster regrowth in Spring.

What are the benefits of Pruning?

It’s mostly about safety. You have overgrown areas trimmed away from sidewalks and driveways. Overlapping branches can cause damage to each other. These can be trimmed so that the healthier branch will remain, and the potential risk removed. And last, removing dead or dying branches now is better than waiting for a storm to hit and causing damage to other plants, property, or pedestrians.

Beauty is always important, and we can’t leave that out! Pruning allows sunlight to filter through the middle giving the tree an enchanted feel. Pruning your tree in the winter will allow for healthy new growth to appear in spring and you can get a feel for what your tree will look like in spring.
