The Things Your Trees Need in Order to Grow

We talk a lot about ways to keep your trees healthy here on our blog, and making sure your trees have all that they need to grow is a part of keeping them healthy and looking great. If you’re not sure what your trees need to grow to their full potential, keep reading because today we’re going to share with you some of the important elements your trees need for proper growth, courtesy of the Missouri Department of Conservation.

  • Soil- Soil is arguably the most important variable in the environment of a tree. Soil that is at least three feet deep is great for soil growth because it allows for water to flow through to the roots and will retain moisture as well. Good soil will have some decomposed wood or leaves and a pH level of about 5 or 6.
  • Moisture – Soil should offer a tree adequate amounts of moisture while also allowing for air exchange so oxygen will reach the roots of the tree. Sandy soil or soil with lots of gravel will not hold enough water for trees, and compacted soil that doesn’t allow for proper water percolation could hold too much water, which may suffocate the roots.
  • Sunlight – Trees also need sunlight in order to create their food through photosynthesis. Trees whose leaves are blocked by other trees or buildings won’t be able to produce enough food. The amount of sunlight a tree needs will vary be species, so it is important to know which trees are in your yard and their individual needs.

Take these tree factors into consideration as you care for the trees that are currently in your yard and as you plant new trees. If you have any questions regarding tree care, contact Cartwright Tree Care. We would be happy to assist you with your questions.
