Winter's particularly harsh temperatures  are not only dangerous to people and animals, they can also be harmful to your trees. Here are just a few ways winter can damage your trees so that you can be on the lookout for early signs of harm.

Extreme temperature changes cause damage through warm days and freezing nights. In early fall or late spring, frost crack could damage its tissue, especially after repeated freezes. Take precautions by covering the trees when anticipating a freeze or place mulching around the base to keep roots warm, particularly with younger plants.

Winter burn can also damage the tree. This happens when the roots don't receive the moisture they need and become dried up. Frozen roots damage mostly younger plants and are evident by signs of wilting or declining during the growth period in the spring.

Though it can take some time before you see the evidence of winter damage in trees, there are some preventive measures you can employ:

  • Use mulching for insulation
  • Select hardy plants
  • Keep trees watered throughout the year
