Full-grown, mature trees are the epitome of stability and strength, adding shade and a majestic beauty to your Kansas City landscape. With the arrival of spring, it's a great time to consider planting new trees in your yard. Unfortunately, Kansas City's drought does present some challenges when planting new trees, but with a few tips you can still plant a healthy and thriving tree in dry weather.

  • Plant Smaller Trees – Deciduous trees with trunks less than 2” in diameter and evergreens that are less than 6’ in height are the best candidates for drought conditions.
  • Remember the Locale – All species are best adapted to their home region. In water-scarce times, choose trees that are native to the Kansas City region.
  • Maintain Your Spacing – Trees need light as well as water to thrive, and some species of tree spread their roots far and deep. Make sure your tree has plenty of access to sunlight and room to grow; you don't want to add any stress to a tree planted in drought
  • Trap Moisture – Keep your tree's water supply from evaporating with good mulching. Mulching will help trap water and keep the soil moist around your tree's roots.
