Tips For Starting Seeds

This Article Will Provide You With Tips for Starting Seeds | Considerations for Success

Growing plants is not always an easy feat.
Starting them outside exposes them to more elements and for early seedlings can make things extra difficult.  This is why starting seeds indoors has become such a preferred method.

Not only is it fairly tried and true, it eliminates a lot of the pitfalls that normal gardening poses. Whether you are committed to starting seeds for the first time this year or just thinking about it, consider the following aspects for success.

Use a good potting soil specifically for starting seeds - the old saying “you get what you pay for” certainly applies in this situation.  Investing in a good soil that has a nice density and texture will help with moisture control as the seedling is sprouting and growing. Quality soils also have nutrients added and are at a specific pH level to encourage growth and plant health. Choosing a superior soil for starting seeds will help ensure that your plants have a healthy and balanced start to their development.

Know about your plant’s needs -  every plant requires something a little different in its combination of water, sun and nutrient needs. For example, when watering, tomatoes are best watered heavily once a week. Conversely, lettuces need frequent daily watering. Blooming shrubs from hydrangeas all the way to apple trees each have their own needs. Do a bit of research on what you are growing and familiarize yourself with your seedlings requirements.

Placement – keep seedlings out of reach of children and pets. Curious hands and paws can quickly make a big mess and destroy your hard work and effort by damaging roots or seedlings.  While seedlings don’t cost much, you have invested the time to plant. You likely have even waited a few weeks before seeing a some sprouts. A hutch with shelves or basement storage rack can all be good places to keep your seedlings safe and secure.

Seedlings can be a great way to start any plant or tree. Just keep in mind these tips and tricks and you will be sure to see little sproutlings popping up before you know it!
