Stumps can be eliminated from your yard using a few methods. Decide first whether to completely remove the stump, or leave some portion of the stump in-place in the soil. Experts have different opinions; here are a few:
- Popular Mechanics suggests removing rocks from the base of the stump, cutting the stump as low to the ground as possible with a chain saw, then using a gas-powered stump grinder.
- The Family Handyman suggests using potassium nitrate stump remover to dec
ompose old stumps. Examine the implications for your particular type of soil.
- The University of Georgia says "stumps are a food source and a habitat" and that, if you leave the stump in place, "interesting things can happen, especially when the stump is surrounded by healthy soil."
