Last week, we began to provide you with some winter tree care tips. Proper tree care and maintenance is important at all points throughout the year, as each season has its own set of issues that can affect the health of your trees. Today’s tips com from the International Society of Arboriculture.
- Use mulch! Mulch composed of composted organic material placed under your trees helps them retain water and helps insulate the tree, which reduces temperature extremes and offers extra protection to the roots.
- Trees require water in the winter, too, so be sure to give them a drink occasionally throughout the season, but only water when the soil is cool and not frozen.
- Prevent mechanical injuries, such as branch breakage due to snow and ice accumulation, or chewing and rubbing by animals by wrapping the base of young trees with a hard, plastic guard or a metal hardware cloth. You can also use burlap or plastic cloth, which will help prevent dramatic temperature changes.
And as always, Cartwright Tree Care is here to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have about caring for your trees throughout the winter. Give us a call at 816-965-6758 – we would love to assist you.
