At times the environmental news can be upsetting, depressing even. It can lead us to think there may be no hope. Thankfully, the facts are showing this is not true, and that humans are making a difference. This information was gained by studying trees.
A research done with the assistance of Kansas State University, showed that trees can improve their growth and strength when cleaner air is present. This study took place over four years by studying eastern red cedar trees in the Central Appalachian Mountains.
These trees were more than 100 years old and showed improvement in their growth since the Clean Air Act was passed in 1970. Significant differences were noticeable in the trees' rings in the early 1980s, more than 10 years after the legislation took effect.
The improvement shown from studying the trees' rings indicated that humans can make a difference in helping the good players in our environment to grow stronger.
The trees were an amazing indicator in how changes to the air can effect our environment.
