Types of Cold Weather Damage to Watch Out for in Your Trees

The colder weather of winter tends to have an effect on everything, including the trees! The following are some types of cold damage that you should look out for this winter when caring for your property’s trees:

  • Cold Weather Damage Source: Flickr
Sun scald – On colder days, the sun can heat a tree’s bark up, causing cambial activity to be stimulated. As soon as the sun is blocked (such as by a cloud), the rapid drop in the bark’s temperature can kill the active tissue. You can prevent this by wrapping the trunk up with commercial tree wrap.
  • Winter discoloration – Cold weather can cause evergreens to become discolored – either browning or bleaching the foliage. Prevent this by properly placing evergreens on your property or by propping up pine boughs against the evergreens to protect them against the sun and wind.
  • Frost heaving – When the soil keeps freezing and thawing, it can cause the soil to expand and contract, resulting in damaged roots. Add four to six inches of mulch to prevent this from happening.
