Understanding the Different Types of Storm Damaged

Written by Cartwright on June 25, 2014 . Posted in Emergency Storm Work

Generally the first thing homeowners do after a major storm is head outside and access the damage to surrounding trees and shrubs. By familiarizing yourself with different types of storm damage, you'll be able to determine if you can repair the tree yourself or if an expert tree care specialist needs to be called in.

Blow over. This is exactly as it sounds, the entire tree has been uprooted. If the tree is small and at least half the roots are still intact then it is possible to replant it. In general, larger trees can not be saved and will need to be removed.
  • Branch failure. When branches are damaged it is important to remove them so not to further stress the tree. Smaller branches can easily be cut with pruning shears while larger branches may need an expert to properly take care of the damage.
  • Lightning. Often in a tree struck by lightning the bark will begin to peel off. Care must be taken when removing the remaining loose bark and often a professional needs to handle this delicate procedure.
