Turns out trees are our friends, and maybe even a way to increase our home's market value. CNN Money and Money Magazine recently reported that trees can increase the value of our real estate by as much as 10 percent. The Council of Tree and Landscape Appraisers notes that the trees must be well-cared for to provide such benefits.
More number-crunching reveals tree-related energy savings as well. According to the U.S. Forest Service, a tree with substantial shade can help reduce the cost of air-conditioning by approximately $70 in summer, while a broad-shouldered pine can help hedge against strong winds and keep the home a few degrees warmer in winter.
But the savings can sour if diseased or damaged trees are not properly inspected or maintained. Having to replace a new roof on your home or sustaining other damages due to a felled tree can quickly wipe out any accumulated assets.
