Cabling and bracing reduces the chance of death in a structurally compromised tree by installing cables high into the tree and at least two-thirds the distance away from the defect of the tree. Rods must then be installed right below the defect. There are usually three different situations in which cabling and bracing is needed.
- Reduce the chance of falling or death in a healthy tree with a structural weakness.
- Help a damaged tree live longer.
- Mitigate the danger of a tree falling on an important structure.
