While we mainly discuss tree healthcare and maintenance topics here on our blog, we do like to step outside of the box every once and while and share about other issues or news involving trees, too. Recently, we read about something rather interesting that’s currently under construction in Milan, Italy – the world’s first vertical forest.
The Bosco Verticale, as it is called, will be a 27-story apartment building designed by architect Stefano Boeri. According to Inhabitat, each apartment unit within the building will have a balcony planted with trees that will help to optimize, recuperate, and produce energy, as well as help balance the microclimate of Milan’s urban environment by filtering dust particles and such from the air. Additionally, the trees will offer extra shade in the summer and when bare in the winter, will allow for more sunlight to filter into the apartments, which will offer “dramatic energy savings year round.”
Inhabitat reports that Bosco Verticale is a response to “urban sprawl and the disappearance of nature from our lives and on the landscape.” Architect Boeri noted that if each unit were constructed as stand-alone units on a single surface, the project would needs about 50,000 square meters of land and 10,000 square meters of woodland to complete.
