The ash trees that line the boulevards and dot the backyards throughout our region may soon be under attack from the emerald ash borer. Ash trees are the most common in our city, which means that tree healthcare is more important than ever.

- Spraying the ground around the tree with imidacloprid at least 42 days before the tree leafs out in the spring will stave off the infestation. The tree's roots will gradually absorb the pesticide and deliver it to the tree. When the ash borer bores into the tree, the pesticide kills it. Small trees can be sprayed by do-it-yourselfers, but larger trees require licensed tree care professionals. The treatment lasts for a year.
- Another treatment involves spraying the trees and injecting a poison into the soil that lasts for two years.
- The third treatment involves keeping your ash trees well fed, watered and cared for and planting a replacement tree that will have time to mature when your ash tree does succumb to the infestation.
