If you’re like many people you’ve wondered about what different trees you see all around you in your area and even in your own backyard. While books can be helpful for learning about regional trees, plants, and wildlife, they’re often not very useful when trying to identify a tree on the spot. However, researchers at Purdue Extension may have made that easier by developing a new app.

The App

Designed by forestry experts at Purdue Extension, the app is titled Fifty Trees of the Midwest. Using the app, individuals can use a comparison tool to check between 50 of the most common trees in the Midwest by color, leaf size, buds, twigs, flowers, and fruit and even bark type.

The app also features a glossary where users can do searches for specific trees and make their own notes about trees that they see or trees they want to identify.

How to Get It

The Fifty Trees of the Midwest app is currently available for iPhone, iPad and iPod users. The android version of the app is still in its development stages, but should be available soon.
