Often trees are topped when they are near power lines or to control the height and size, but significant research has determined that topped trees have substantial problems. Generally a tree that has been cut from the top is left poorer condition and faces challenges which include:

  • More diseases, pests and parasites.
  • Large cavities where rodents can take up residence.
  • Numerous dead branches and water sprouts that are particularly dangerous due to excess weight.

Experienced professional tree care specialists can take care of shaping and trimming by using selective pruning practices. This doesn't mean that the height of a tree can't be controlled. It can be, and in many cases, needs to be contained, but it must be done in a manner so that the integrity and health of the tree is maintained.
