The best time to prune or trim trees and shrubs is late winter when they’re in a dormant state. Pruning during the dormant season is optimal because: The wounds heal much faster, keeping the plant strong and vibrant. There is also less risk of disease or pest infestation because there is less sap flowing.

Of course, there are expectations!

There are recommended times to prune most trees.

For example, fruit trees should be pruned when they are young, to keep them a manageable size and to create strong limbs that can support lots of future fruit production. Deciduous trees, like fruit trees, are best pruned when dormant. Limbs are not weighted down with heavy leaves, and the structure of the tree is easier to see.

Conifers do not usually require as much pruning as deciduous trees. They have a natural tendency to form and shape themselves, that usually needs pruning only to remove diseased and dead branches, or to control the size, especially after our massive growing season.

As with all trees, it is best to choose correctly in the first place, selecting a tree that will not outgrow its allotted space or be a potential threat to your home.
