Fire Ants in Hay

The University of Missouri reports that Ozark County, MO recently saw a fire ant infestation in out-of-state hay. The tiny stinging insects favor warmer weather, and are found in hay imported from the Southeastern U.S. However, they could potentially set up colonies in southern Missouri, where winters are milder. The Missouri Department of Conservation states that the spotted knapweed is, despite its vibrant pink or purple flower, a highly invasive weed that should be killed as soon as possible. Across Missouri and Kansas, this weed is harming every type of landscape, from farms to golf courses. The plant is even on the Kansas Department of Agriculture, Plant Protection and Weed Control’s “Watch List” for invasive plant species.
